The BEST Onesies for Long Babies

The BEST Onesies for Long Babies

During the newborn stage, our sweet Evan was quite average in size. Born just under 8 lbs, her 21″ long frame and skinny bod was nothing to worry about when it came to dressing her in the normal newborn size. When she was nearing a couple months old, her pant legs quickly became too short. Her sleepers were getting tight. Not because she was wide, but because they were tugging at her shoulders due to length. Let me tell you ’bout our best friend in terms of pajama onesies for our long and lean baby girl. These are the best onesies for long babies.

In some “sisterhood of the traveling onesie” miracle, there is one brand in particular that my child can currently fit into several sizes ranging from 3-18 months. Yes, you read that correctly.

The brand?

Burt’s Bees.

My girl is 6 months old and busting out of 9-12 months Carter brand clothing. Yet, in Burt’s Bees she is currently wearing a sleeper sized 3-6 months. And a couple others sized 6-9 months. But here’s the kicker- She’s also fitting into their size 18 months.

Normally I would not have discovered this, but since she is getting so large, I figured I’d wash the red and white striped jammies I got with the intention of her wearing next Christmas. I thought I would maybe check if she could swing them for a festive look this Christmas Eve.

Well, hubby found them in the clean laundry basket and loves the chunky stripe pattern so he promptly dressed her in them one evening. To my surprise, they fit! They don’t even look that big on her. Cue confusion…

She had a Burt’s Bees newborn sized onesie and did seem to outgrow that rather quickly. I remember her busting out of it on our 4th of July road trip, meaning she would have been about 6 weeks old.

But the 3-6 month onesie? She’s basically been rocking that since she was 6 weeks old. And now she’s almost exactly 6 months old. Granted, she’s almost outgrown the 3-6 month onesie.

BUT- she has certainly outgrown several other brands’ 6-9 month onesies and is currently sitting pretty in those same brands’ 9-12 month sizes that I’m certain will soon be too-small.

The best part?

There’s no need to buy every size in these Burts Bees sleepers. Had I known my babe would be able to fit into an 18 month onesie at 6 months, I wouldn’t have bothered with any of the 6-9 month sizes I purchased. And I certainly won’t be ordering any 9-12 or 12-18 month sizes going forward!

These onesies are “snug fit”. I’ll be honest, the whole “snug fit” for a newborn, AKA having to shove your fragile baby limbs into it as a new mom was not ideal. I probably had enough courage / she had enough strength to withstand that by 3-4 weeks, and with her outgrowing it by 6 weeks, I wouldn’t recommend the newborn size.

However, I bet the 3-6 month onesie she’s in right now would have been great for her around 4 weeks, and it wouldn’t have been so difficult to get into since it’s larger.

The even better part?

I don’t think the magic of these onesies is limited to long babies!! They have this elastic around the ankles that seems like a pain at first, but this is what helps your smaller baby fit into larger sizes. The baby’s feet will always be where they need to be in these sleepers, because of the elastic. And the arms? Well, the snug-fit is just snug enough so that you can cuff the sleeve once or twice and it will just stay put. Easy peasy.

Economical. Practical. Organic. Sustainable. My heart is fluttering just thinking about it. (I wish I were kidding).
